CAC 40

The CAC 40 (Cotation Assistée en Continu) is the leading index of the Paris stock exchange and is regarded as a market indicator for the general retail trends on the Euronext Paris stock exchange. It was introduced on 31 December 1987 and had a baseline value of 1,000 points at this time. Retroactive daily prices are available for the CAC 40 as far back as 1969, however, and retroactive weekly prices are available as far back as 1965. (read more)

The CAC lists France’s 40 largest companies traded on the Paris Stock Exchange. The companies in the index are weighted primarily on the basis of market capitalization and the market price of the shares in free float; a company’s weighting may not exceed the 15 per cent mark, however. In addition, a company limited by shares must fulfill certain criteria in order to be included in the CAC 40. For example, the company must be among France’s most important companies and must be domiciled in France. Furthermore, the company’s shares must be among the hundred most traded shares on the Paris stock exchange. The composition of the CAC 40 is reviewed quarterly by a commission and adjusted when necessary.

In contrast to the DAX, the CAC 40 is a price index. Consequently, the index level represents the average of the shares included in it. Dividend payments are not considered in the index. The price level of the CAC 40 is calculated and published each trading day once a second between 9:00 am and 5:30 pm.
